Tracton Athletics Club
Our History
Founded in 1972 in the vibrant village of Minane Bridge, Tracton Athletic Club began as a grassroots movement led by a group of passionate local sportspeople. Recognising a need for organised athletics in the area, a small but dedicated team laid the groundwork for what would become one of South Cork’s most enduring athletic clubs.
The club owes its foundation to the vision and commitment of its founding members:
Jim Crowley, Tom Brady, Fr. Michael O’Mahony, Mossie Hoare, Finbarr Aherne, Dick Barry and John Walsh
These individuals were instrumental in organising early training sessions, sourcing basic equipment, and securing affiliation with BLE (Bord Lúthchleas na hÉireann). Their collective belief in the power of sport to shape young lives and build community spirit set the tone for the decades to follow.
From the outset, juvenile development was at the heart of the club's mission. Children and teens from Minane Bridge and surrounding parishes were given the opportunity to train regularly and compete at local, county, and provincial levels. The early days were humble—training often took place in borrowed fields or makeshift tracks—but the energy and dedication of the club’s leaders were unmatched.
By the 1980s and 1990s, Tracton AC had established itself as a force in Cork athletics. The club’s athletes earned regular success at Munster Championships, and many were selected to represent Cork at inter-county and national events. Among the most celebrated athletes from this era were:
In the 2000s and beyond, the club expanded its mission to include masters athletes, casual runners, and returning adults, offering a welcoming space for all who wanted to stay active and connected through athletics.
Recent standouts include:
Today, Tracton AC continues to thrive. Thanks to the foundation laid by its pioneering members and the countless volunteers who followed, the club remains a beacon of sport, inclusion, and community spirit. With modern facilities, dedicated coaching, and a vibrant membership, Tracton AC is proud of its past and excited for its future.
