8pm H IS FOR HAWK Claire Foy plays Helen Macdonald in 2007, a fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge teaching the history and philosophy of science. Helen adores and hero-worships her Dad, the award-winning photographer Alisdair Macdonald, played in the film by Brendan Gleeson - who inculcated in her a love of nature - and when he dies she is utterly distraught. (Guardian review.)
After losing her beloved father, Helen finds herself saved by an unlikely friendship with a stubborn hawk named Mabel. This film is based on Helen's memoir: Loss and grief are the emotional landscape of Helen Macdonald’s work (memoir) 'H Is for Hawk'. It tells of her attempts to train a goshawk called Mabel after the sudden death of her father; at once a devastating memoir and an elegant addition to the burgeoning genre of contemporary nature writing. (Guardian article.) Docu-drama 2 hours 8 mins |
