THE  LIFE  OF CHUCK
Described by IMDb as a life-affirming, genre-bending (Drama - Fantasy - Sci-Fi) story about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man. The chapters are linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse -  beginning with his death from a brain tumour at 39, and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house. A moving and spiritually uplifting film; pessimistic at times, but optimism eventually shining through without diminishing any of its dramatic realism.

The Life Of Chuck is based on a novella by Stephen King, but is not the classic horror generally associated with him. Described as a Spielberg-esque wonder... a King story through and through; the style, the nostalgia, the weirdness, the Americanisms... (The Indiependent: see William Stotter's review here)

Running time: 1hr 51mins

As this film is shown in three acts in reverse chronological order, Ian Brooker (who chooses our films for us, and introduces them on screening nights whenever he can) has kindly written his own thoughts on what to expect, together with his suggestion of how to watch the film. PALESTINE  36
ARABIC with subtitles - and ENGLISH
This powerful and timely historical drama chronicles the beginnings of the 1936-1939 Arab Revolt. The British administered Palestine under a mandate established by the League of Nations at the end of the First World War. As Palestinian villages revolt against this British administration, Yusuf navigates between Jerusalem and his rural home, amidst escalating unrest and a pivotal moment for the British Empire. Weaving together multiple character strands and using striking archival footage to create emotional engagement with the characters’ respective destinies, it sets up the cruelty and injustice of the decades that would follow - eventually leading us to what we are witnessing today.

SANTOSH

In Hindi with subtitles
In rural India, 28-year-old, newly widowed Santosh avails of a scheme to inherit her late husband’s job as a police officer.  As a diligent worker, when a girl's body is found, she's pulled into the investigation under the wing of charismatic feminist inspector Sharma. The investigation reveals disturbing truths about class divides, as well as the troubling lengths Santosh’s colleagues will go to to find a culprit. Gripping, gritty storytelling acknowledges some of the murkier aspects of modern India, including police corruption and brutality, sexism and caste prejudice.

SENTIMENTAL

VALUE

Norwegian (with subtitles)
and English
In Norway stage actress Nora and her sister Agnes are surprised to be reunited with their estranged father, Gustav - who reappears after  his ex-wife's death. Gustav is a once-renowned film-maker, and wishing to reconnect with his daughter he offers Nora the lead role in his new autobiographical film about his own mother’s suicide. When Nora declines, he casts an American actress in the role.

In this film Gustav’s autobiographical project is used as a means to unpack the family’s messy history, exposing layers of generational trauma and simmering resentment. The film explores family dynamics through the lens of a film director and his estranged daughters. A poignant family drama about art, legacy, and complicated relationships -  it blends humor with deep melancholy and emotional weight.
