BASTARDEN (THE PROMISED LAND) In Danish with subtitles. |
The Promised Land (Danish title: Bastarden) is a historical drama that is the generally true, but heavily dramatized, story of war veteran Ludvig Kahlen, portrayed by the internationally beloved actor Mads Mikkelsen.
In 18th century Denmark a proud, ambitious, but impoverished war hero sets out to tame a vast, uninhabitable land on which seemingly nothing can grow. He seeks to start farming crops, build a colony in the name of the King, and gain a noble title for himself. This beautiful but forbidding area also happens to be under the rule of the merciless Frederik De Schinkel, a preening nobleman who realizes the threat Kahlen represents to his power. Struggling against the elements and local brigands, Kahlen is joined by a couple who have fled the clutches of De Schinkel. As this group of misfits begins to build a small community in this inhospitable place, De Schinkel swears vengeance... The film delves into the intricate interplay of ambition, revenge, and the quest for recognition, as these formidable characters engage in a fierce conflict. |
SPECIAL EVENT Living The Tradition Film plus Live Show SATURDAY, 26th OCTOBER - 8pm Behind every Irish tune is an ancient tale of love and loss, of history and heroes. Living the Tradition is the journey of cello player and composer Ilse de Ziah around Ireland in a search for undiscovered secrets of ten Irish Airs. Along the way she meets with renowned Irish musicians, scholars and local characters who share with her the history and stories behind the music. Ilse performs each of these intensely beautiful pieces in the places they originally come from. Filmmaker Maarten Roos captures the landscapes, the charm of the Irish people and the powerful resonance of the cello, creating a fresh account of Irish music and culture.
